A class to get you started Urban Sketching both in theory and practice.

Workshop 2:  Creating a Rich Drawing  FULL – CLOSED 
                        Instructor:  Don Colley

This workshop will address strategies of opening the drawing and setting up the page to further develop features.

This is a workshop to introduce you to Urban Sketching with an Apple iPad.

Workshop 4:  Supply Speed Dating   CLOSED                                 Facilitator:  Allana Pierce

This workshop is a fun and informative way to give you the chance to try out 2-4 other Urban Sketchers’ setups and tools.

Workshop 5:  Taking Guesswork Out of Your Color Work  FULL – CLOSED

Instructor:  Alex Zonis

This is a class on the selection and use of color when sketching on location, using principles of color theory of Johannes Itten.  Practice color like a painter!

Workshop 6:  Rapid Travel Sketch with Watercolor   FULL – CLOSED 
                     
Instructor:  Keelan Kaiser

This workshop teaches hybridizing the Velasquez palette with Chinese watercolor techniques.

Description

A proper introduction to Urban Sketching, this workshop will clear up any possible confusion between what makes this different from other forms of sketching – a class to help get you started Urban Sketching.

Goals

    •  Defining Urban Sketching
    •  Reviewing and understanding the Urban Sketching Manifesto
    •  Learning the history of the Urban Sketchers movement
    •  What kind of people make up urban sketchers?  Is there any kind of training or prerequisite to be an urban sketcher?

      1.  Facing the scene and the blank page

      3.  Understanding the why and how of sketching

Workshop 2:  Creating a Rich Drawing  FULL – CLOSED   
                        Instructor:  Don Colley

Description

The challenge of creating a rich drawing is made easier if you are using a varied range of tools.  This workshop will address strategies of opening the drawing and setting up the page to further develop features.  Some of the topics we will cover include:

    • How to shift gears by changing the nib width or switching to brush work
    • How to rapidly capture planes and strong features
    • How to render more than objects and perspective, thereby suggesting mood,  light, season, weather and time of day
    • How to take advantage of the inherent qualities of the paper and tools

Goals

    •  Using time effectively by using tools appropriate for the job
    •  Understanding the role of editing in reducing the number of details without losing liveliness and character
    • Introducing a broader range of marks and values to enhance the drawing

Workshop 3:  Urban Sketching with an iPad  CLOSED
                        Instructor:  Wes Douglas

Description

This workshop is an introduction to Urban Sketching with an Apple iPad.  The information is limited to an iPad and not other tablet devices.  I have an iPad 2, but a newer iPad would still be applicable to this workshop.

Goals

    • Choosing your device
    • Reviewing the styli available on the market
    • Reviewing the various sketch apps available/which work best?
    • Building yourself a hand bridge
    • Learning best practices working with an iPad

Workshop 4:  Supply Speed Dating  CLOSED                               Facilitator:  Allana Pierce

Description

Ever wondered what tools other Urban Sketchers use or what they’re like to work with? This workshop will give you the chance to try 2-4 other Urban Sketchers’ setups and tools.  Workshop participants will set up their urban sketching tools (chairs, notebooks, pens, paints, etc.) and prepare to make a sketch, BUT, before participants begin sketching, they will rotate to their left and sketch on their neighbors’ notebooks with their neighbors’ tools.  After thirty minutes, each participant will move to another location and try another sketcher’s tools!

Gaining experience with other setups and tools

Workshop 5:  Taking Guesswork Out of Your Color Work  FULL – CLOSED
                       Instructor:  Alex Zonis

Description

We will discuss selection and use of color when sketching on location, using principles of color theory of Johannes Itten.  Participants will understand the color wheel, learn 8 basic color schemes and 7 methods of color contrast.  We will create one or two sketches using some of the more exotic color schemes and an unusual contrast method.

Goals

    • Understanding a universal system of thinking about color and color vocabulary
    • Understanding the system behind intuitive color work
    • Practicing color like a painter

Workshop 6:  Rapid Travel Sketch with Watercolor   FULL – CLOSED

Description

Loose Architectural Sketching with Bold Watercolor: Hybridizing the Velasquez Palette with Chinese Watercolor Techniques

Goals

Participants will understand and explore some of the key principles involved in using the Velasquez palette of colors used in architectural watercolor to capture material and light, while at the same time deploying the bold use of color and mixing that is present in Chinese watercolor.

Workshop 6:  Rapid Travel Sketch with Watercolor  FULL – CLOSED

Workshop 7:  How to Sketch Like an Architect   FULL – CLOSED
                        Instructor:  Joel Berman

Description

Students will learn how to rapidly document the buildings in their own graphic vocabulary, both interior and exterior.  The class will stress a formulaic approach to developing exceptional compositions using thumbnail diagrams and basic, non-technical perspective.  Emphasis will be placed on loose, free hand drawing techniques in lieu of technical drawing.  This class is appropriate for beginners with no experience.

The sketching will focus on several nearby historic Chicago buildings – outdoor and/or indoor locations, depending on the weather.

Goals

    • Learning or improving upon the following freehand sketching skills and techniques: contour lines, value and contrast, composition, and one-point and two-point perspective
    • Improving your ability to document and remember the existing built environment
    • Improving your ability to use freehand sketching as an architectural design tool

Workshop 8:  Sketching as a Team Sport    CLOSED
                        Facilitators:  Alex Zonis and Don Colley

Description

We will practice collaborative sketching.  The team of sketchers will work on a preselected location.  We will huddle and decide on our formation (line or triangle or square) and work in collaboration to create an urban mural.  We will select our urban panorama and divide it into segments.  We will work on individual sheets, taking care to match image sizes with our neighbor sketchers on both sides.

Goals

Our goals are teamwork, camaraderie, community building, friendship and fun.  We will be sketching a mural for a potential exhibit.
